What it is
The bangu 板鼓, also known as single-skin drum 单皮鼓 is a Chinese drum with a loud and piercing sound. Often used in operas as the conducting instrument and sometimes in more traditional Chinese orchestra pieces as either a lead or accompaniment.
It is easily one of the most difficult Chinese drums to play and to master due to its limited articulations and very small playing area. It is also common for the player to play the bangu with one hand and pair it with clappers 拍板/莲花板 in the other.
